1963 Chevrolet Impala 2dr Hardtop:
What we have here is a wonderful "409" specimen with an
incredible story of true survivorship! This car was saved
from a certain demise at the gates of a local speedway
demolition derby, really! Today, its standard for others to
be judged by! Study the 4 web pages of detailed photos and
read the amazing history as told by the current
caretaker/restorer...
"THE
RESCUE OF OLD NUMBER 13"
Over 25 years ago, a car
enthusiast from Walla Walla, Washington, a small farming
community in South Eastern Washington State, decided to drive
over to Kennewick, Washington to attend the weekly demolition
derby. He was in the pit area looking at the cars lining up to
go on to the field for the next event. Much to his total dismay,
up pulls a wonderful old 1963 Chevrolet Impala 409 2-door
hardtop. A quick inspection confirmed that this was indeed a
numbers matching 409. Two young fellows were aboard
the vehicle. A quick inspection of the car revealed that it
didn’t appear to have ever been wrecked or rusted. It was still
adorned with the original paint, red with a white top. (see
sub-page photos) The young fellows had removed all the glass and
painted big number 13s on the sides but other than that the car
looked great. The enthusiast immediately stopped the young
fellows and asked what they were doing and was told the car was
on its way into the demolition derby. It never made it as the
enthusiast bought the car before it could make it onto the
track.
He took
the 409 home and tore it down in his shop. Over the next 22
years, he managed to complete the frame and drive train, and was
preparing to begin the body. Unfortunately, he died an
unexpected death and we purchased the car from his widow in June
of 2005.
We
brought the car to the Boise, Idaho area to continue the total
body off restoration of the car. Every piece and part of the
car was dismantled and carefully inspected and replaced or
repaired if there was any wear revealed. Closer inspection
revealed no body damage ever and no rust. The body was taken
down to its individual panels and painted the original ember red
on the bottom with the ermine white roof using high quality
acrylic enamel paint. The paintwork on this vehicle speaks for
itself. It has taken two years to accomplish the reassembly
process to the standards we have imposed upon ourselves. This
automobile is absolutely stunning in it’s presentation.
All work
on this car has been performed to exacting standards. All trim,
glass, interior, tires, brake lines, fuel lines, gas tank,
seals, weather-stripping, door handles, moldings, wiring,
exhaust system, inner fenders, grille, battery, rear deck panels
and inserts, etc., are new and correct. All running gear,
engine, transmission, rear end, steering, brakes, radiator,
etc., have been rebuilt to new specifications. The bumpers,
valve covers, and steering wheel center section have been
re-chromed and much of the original trim has been buffed to
perfection. The original clock has been converted to a digital
operation. When we bought the car it was missing the original
Rochester carburetor so, after a long search, we were able to
find a correct, green (brand new, NOS) Rochester. Following
initial completion of the car, we noticed that it “sagged” on
the drivers side so all four coil springs were replaced.
Entering this classic is a step back in time to an era of fun,
excitement, great music and late night street activity. This
“409” represents it all!!!! The interior and exterior
originality and detail are “spot on”.
No
expense was spared on this restoration. The car is razor
straight and the doors fit and close better than when they were
new. This is a brand new automobile that has zero miles on it
following restoration other than moving it from shop to shop and
tuning.
